Printer Profile Torture!

This was not fun!

After creating the profile my test image turned out extremely strange, all the highlights were as if they had been inverted and were extremely weird!

With Brian's help we worked out that the images had been corrupt and i would have to start all over again!

So the second time round it all worked out much better! The test image has no strange colour casts and no strange inverted/solarised highlights

Ring around image to large to upload...

3rd Calibration

quite an obvious change between the un-calibrated and the calibrated screen shots in this calibration.

HDR again :P

I'm getting there...
Please see workshop blog for more research on panoramas :)

HDR

So my HDR's have not been working that well so i thought that i would have a look at some other HDR's to get a bit of feel for them, get some inspiration and general try and figure out where i am going wrong.

Colour Management Questions!

What is the purpose of colour management ?

  • improve the color match between your monitor and printer.
  • work with fine art papers or nonstandard inks, for example, archival pigment-based inks from independent manufacturers.
  • send out an image to be printed, for example, on a large format LightJet printer.
  • reproduce color as precisely as possible-- for example, for fashion, weddings, or art reproduction.

What problem makes colour management necessary ?

Printers use densitometers which makes them very inaccurate and they do not measure colour.

What are the components of a device profile (ie what information do they contain) ?

What is the difference between a device profile and a working space ?

(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_management) and/or

A device profile is the settings/colours you makes the screen/device have/use where as a working space can not be changed by you but it is the colour area that you do you work in.

What is a ‘reference colour space’ and how are they used ? Give an example of one.

A ‘Reference colour space’ aims to describe all colors visible to the human eye based upon the average response from a set of people with no vision problems eg standard colorimetric

What is the difference between ‘calibrating’ and ‘profiling’ ?

Profiling is the product of calibrating. Calibrating brings the system into line and then you save those settings as a profile for future use.

What is a Rendering Intent ?

Common rendering intents include: absolute and relative colorimetric, perceptual, and saturation. Each of these types maintains one property of color at the expense of others

Which Rendering Intents are most useful to photographers, and when would you use each of them ?

In practice, photographers almost always use relative or perceptual intent, as for natural images, absolute causes color cast, while saturation produces unnatural colors.

Presentation time

Imaging Technique: Polar Panorama
  • ·         Description – the technique is creating a Polar panorama. This is a panorama that seems to create a 360 degree view of the environment, often it has a small patch of land in the very middle of the image and buildings/trees/other parts of the environment around it. The environment is transformed into a circle
  • ·         Tools - Crop, marquee tool, layer mask, Filters>Distort>Polar Coordinates>Rectangular to polar.
  • ·         Process -  For this technique i found a tutorial at   http://adobetuts.blogspot.com.au/2009/04/create-your-very-own-planet.html
  • ·         Sample images - Images found after researching on the internet

Calibration and Profiling a Display Device

Week 3 - Friday
1st Calibration

As you can see there was not much difference between the before and after of the calibration this time. the only real difference i could see was between some of the skin tones in the woman's face, apart from that the screen in my opinion stayed the same, meaning that this screen was already close to the correct calibration.

Lets see if there are any difference next time.

Activity one - testing the devices out
For this activity i dont have any images but did participate in testing two screens, the first as a group with Jen, Dylan and Kayla. The second time just me and Kayla preformed the calibration.
